About the Program

Connecting Global Pakistani Youth to National Development

The URAAN Summer Scholars Program, an initiative of the Ministry of Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, engaged 31 outstanding Overseas Pakistani youth from 45+ countries in Pakistan’s policymaking landscape.

During the 6-week program, scholars met Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, visited the National Assembly, NADRA, and the Ministry of IT, and worked closely with members of Parliament and the Ministry. They presented policy proposals and contributed across the URAAN 5Es framework—Exports, E-Pakistan, Environment, Energy & Infrastructure, and Equity & Empowerment.

The program built global networks, fostered collaboration with Young Development Fellows (YDFs) and YPDC chapters, and now continues its legacy through an active Alumni Network and scholar-led initiatives worldwide.

Discover the transformative experiences of past participants in the URAAN Summer Scholars Program

I joined the URAAN Summer Scholars Program because I wanted to connect my passion for sustainability with Pakistan's development journey. Coming from a background of student leadership, I was eager to learn how young voices can play a role in shaping policy. These weeks have been truly transformative—meeting inspiring mentors and peers gave me a deeper sense of purpose and showed me the power of collective action. The most impactful lesson I carry forward is that even small ideas can spark big change when shared in the right spaces. I look forward to staying connected through the alumni network and continuing to contribute to Pakistan's growth in my own capacity.

I joined the URAAN Overseas Pakistani Summer Scholars Program to explore Pakistan's pressing policy challenges and understand how decisions are made at the national level. This was my first practical exposure to policymaking, especially within the Ministry of Planning, and it proved to be a truly enriching experience. Along the way, I met incredible colleagues from top universities abroad. Also it was a great learning experience to interact with skillful and inspiring specialists at MoPDnSI. Our visits to national institutions were so enriching where I saw the operations practically and that made it much more valuable. In a short span of time, we achieved and experienced so much together, building friendships that I know will last for years. Most importantly, URAAN helped me realize that meaningful change is possible, and that I can be part of it. Looking ahead, I see a clear path to return after my studies abroad and contribute actively to Pakistan's development wherever I can.

Joining the URAAN Program was a decision rooted in both ambition and responsibility. As an overseas Pakistani, I have always felt the dual pull of seeking global opportunities while remaining committed to my roots. URAAN offered the perfect bridge,an opportunity to sharpen my skills, expand my worldview, and reimagine how I can contribute meaningfully to Pakistan's future. What set this experience apart was its practicality. From visits to various ministries to thought provoking discussions, every moment was designed to push us beyond theory into action. The program reshaped my perspective: I now see leadership not as a title, but as the ability to collaborate, create opportunities, and build systems that outlast individuals. Looking ahead, I intend to stay deeply engaged with the alumni network, channeling global exposure into local solutions. Whether through mentoring, knowledge-sharing, or building sustainable initiatives, URAAN has equipped me to transform ideas into impact and to stay connected to Pakistan no matter where I am in the world.

My time as a Research Fellow with the URAAN program, working under the Ministry of Planning, was one of the most valuable experiences of my career. I really enjoyed working within the government because it gave my academic research a real purpose. At university, I study environmental engineering research focused on CO2 capture technology. But here, I got to apply that knowledge to actual energy challenges facing Pakistan. It was the perfect connection between what I learn in class and what I am passionate about. Seeing how policy and planning work from the inside was incredibly motivating. It showed me how important it is to have researchers specifically oversee scholars working directly on national projects. This experience didn't just teach me new skills; it showed me how I can best use my skills to make a difference. This hands-on involvement has inspired me greatly. It has strengthened my commitment to my country. After I complete my master's degree at UCAS, my goal is to return to Pakistan and continue serving in the public sector. I want to contribute the advanced knowledge I have gained back to my homeland, to help build a more sustainable and energy-secure future for us all.

Joining the URAAN Summer Scholars Program was inspired by my passion for sustainability and my academic journey in sustainable engineering, where I have always sought to bridge knowledge with real-world impact. Being placed under the Environment pillar of the 5Es framework allowed me to see firsthand how policies are shaped and executed at the federal level. Engaging with ministry members, key institutions, and stakeholders gave me invaluable insights into governance and policymaking in Pakistan. What stood out most was witnessing the alignment of national priorities with long-term sustainable development goals. Looking ahead, I aim to stay connected by contributing to Pakistan's environmental initiatives, supporting evidence-based policy, and engaging with the URAAN alumni network to continue driving positive change.

As a medical student in Türkiye, coming home to Pakistan and seeing the lack of some basic healthcare policies made me realize how beneficial my overseas experience can be for my country. I think that to be a great doctor one needs exposure in the fields of public health and policymaking. The URAAN Overseas Scholars Program was the perfect opportunity for me to express my love for Pakistan by working towards practical solutions for chronic problems. After 6 weeks of working at the Ministry of Planning, I have become more aware of the ground realities. I have had the pleasure of working alongside people who not only encouraged my ideas but took my solutions seriously. It has been truly fulfilling knowing I have prepared proposals and summaries that can help individuals living in this country. I'm also grateful to the amazing colleagues I have met from the best universities in the world. Working together, brainstorming ideas, and turning those ideas into reality has been incredible. I intend to stay connected with everyone I have worked with and I hope I get a chance to do more rewarding and life-changing work in Pakistan.
